Broadcom wins devolo over with 40mn HomePlug AV Chip

Broadcom's press release trumpets their winning of devolo's, the world's leading manufacturer of power line communication products, business.

Broadcom's 40nm single-die BCM60321, enables HomePlug manufacturers to sell a very small adapter, with TWO Ethernet ports at a 30% cheaper solution cost. Broadcom has also made an effort on power savings with a standby mode using less than 0.5W. The BCM60321 is a second generation chip for Broadcom, who bought Gigle Networks in December 2010. It is fully interoperable with the previous devolo favorite solution from Qualcomm. Qualcomm has a chip, ATH7420, in the works to compete with the BCM60321 with the same level of integration, but it has not yet surfaced--end of June?

HomePlugAV/IEEE 1901 and IEEE 802.11n a perfect marriage

The pre-CeBIT press releases are arriving. Aztech and devolo are both marrying HomePlug AV (aka pre-IEEE 1901) with IEEE 802.11n wireless.

Aztech's press release just says they have a "Wireless-N Extender for its HomePlug powerline range of network accessories".

devolo's press release not only mentions their 802.11n/HomePlug AV product, but it also pushes their 500Mbps HomePlug AV/IEEE 1901 turbo product.

The ecosystem for HomePlug AV/IEEE 1901 products is getting wider and wider.

Looks like devolo has bought into the whole IEEE 1901 standard and the Atheros 7400 chip.

Claiming 500Mbps for IEEE 1901, out pacing G.hn claims of 400Mbps; what is 100 Mbps among friends. Any case, pox of both of them knowing we will only get a third of the claims in real-life.

"Pass through" adaptor now main stream with HomePlug AV designs

"Pass through" PLC adaptors are cool in that you don't loose a power socket when you plug the adaptor into the wall and, even better, filters any performance impacting high-frequency noise that my be injected by PCs, TVs and the like.
